Web & PC UI: Email Design

Naturally extending from web design, email design takes a more conservative approach in implementation, due to the nature of the medium. However, more ridged standards do not necessarily mean a sacrifice in style and presentation, as witnessed below.

Client: Hilton / Tundra Restaurant

General Overview of Client:

Located within downtown Toronto's Hilton Hotel is one of the city's premiere gourmet restaurants - Tundra. Following a defined template, Tundra promotes it's cuisine as well as any related promotions via monthly e-newsletters.

About: Earth Hour - Tundra:

In this sample I was called upon to combine aspects of a global feel, but to still relate the design back towards food - in relation to Earth Hour. No global/space themes. After carefully selecting a grand scale image of an open field, I worked in large billowing clouds, altered the field from brown to green, and then added a large curve to the photo. The large curve of the sky along with the clouds were meant to mimic how one might view the atmosphere from space - giving us that "global" feel while still staying within the requested design parameters.

Compare and Contrast:

Roll over the link at left and see how, while the design changes, the basic theme for Tundra remains no matter the monthly theme.

Client: BMO - Bank of Montreal

About:

While certainly more staid in appearance than the flats for Hilton's Tundra, the look and feel is indicative of a solid branding theme suitable for BMO's targeted clientele.

The masthead at top boldly calls out the BMO Brand. The primary message, at left, sits on a white background, while the secondary info, at right, is reversed out on blue.

While the banner may appear disproportionate in size to the remainder of the email, in actual size and display on screen, most would only see the photo, primary call-out, and masthead at first.

Technical:

Several key elements were managed within the client-supplied photo. The bench was changed from a medium orange to a more on-message corporate red; the man's suit was changed from a dark brown to a dark blue-gray; the folder was changed from a purple to match the corporate blue; and the tie was slightly tweaked as well.

Client: Transcontinental Media

Overview of Client and Direction:

While this probably appears to be an email for PharmaPlus, it is in actual fact a mock-up designed for Transcontinential. ThinData, my current employer, functions as the web and interactive arm of our much larger parent - Transcontinential. With this distinction in mind, they came to our creative department seeking to create an email derived from varous other mocked-up print materials. Together, Transcontenental produced - as a powerful selling feature - a full-scale mock campaign for one of their top clients spanning all various mediums.

Client: Transcontinental Media

Overview of Client and Direction:

Working directly with Transcontinental, I helped to brainstorm, design and implement their very first email acquisition and retention campaign for their various publications.

Because Transcontinental is so steeped in print, and because their long-time customers might not be used to viewing promotional materials via email, we decided to create a generic flat that offered features harkening back to traditional media. Some of those key elements are: the appearance of a tear-away at the bottom, a starburst call-out, a paper-like fold at the bottom of the email, fanned magazines, a bold and clean look, and more.

While the flat that is displayed is for ELLE Canada, key elements stretched across countless magazine subscription emails for such notables as: Home & Country, Western Living, Hockey News, Canadian Living, Homemakers, Madame, Style at Home, Canadian Gardening, Vancouver Magazine, as well as a slew of other French-Canadian publications. In each instance, assets have been slightly altered to fit with each unique identity and color scheme.
